We had a lovely stay at The Buttery and would have no reservations about staying again. I think it's important to understand what you are getting. The single entrance door leads via a narrow winding staircase to reception area so probably not suitable for those less ambulant. The staff are simply amazing, very friendly, helpful and nothing is too much trouble for them. We had interactions with a number of staff members and every single one provided the same friendly, professional manner that we really appreciated. The building due to its age had limitations but to be honest, the uneven floors, narrow passageways and traditional door locks (no keycards here). Really adds to the charm of the place. Our room was clean, warm and very comfortable with all the amenities we needed. The location is simply brilliant for exploring Oxford and this coupled with the lovely staff and comfortable rooms really made for a great stay.

Noisy room

Pros: Location
Room 102 is located next to Reception Andy on the creaky staircase. Expect to be woken each time guests return to the hotel late at night.

Good location but dowdy

Pros: Location to centre of the city but no parking.
Cons: All of the above
Location: Location in broad street very close to the colleges and restaurants.
Undergoing some sort of building work the view from our room at the back was of scaffolding. Awoken at 7.30 am by builders loud voices practically right outside. The location is great but the hotel is very dowdy. A very steep staircase which winds round and round. The breakfast ( continental) was poor. The waitress not interested in helping at all. the room itself was clean but shower was terrible very poor water flow and so badly positioned that it was impossible to stand under it. No car park . An overnight stay in the nearest car park was £19

Wonderful Hotel in central location.

Pros: Almost everything.
Cons: My wife is a master tiler and she mentioned the grouting in the shower could have been neater.
Location: Within walking distance of just about everything. The oldest pub in Oxford, The White Horse was a minute walk away. The superb Kings Arms as well.
Last week we spent 2 days in the Buttery Hotel in Oxford. Couldn’t fault it. Next time we’re in Oxford, if they have room, we will be staying there. Everything right on the doorstep and the staff were wonderful, nothing seemed to be too much trouble. We found the decor fresh and very tasteful. Huge marble fireplace and a chandelier in our room. Bath room excellent with big fluffy towels etc. Loads of tea & real coffee provided. Lots of variety for breakfast. We had a very pleasant stay so a big thank you to all at the hotel. Hopefully we will be back.

Nice hotel in the centre

Pros: Location, atmosphere, cleanliness, view
Location: Close to the coach station, The Bodleian Library and the centre
The Buttery is very central but the location is still peaceful and quiet, at least in the middle of the week. Amazing view facing The Balliol College. Atmospheric old building (stairs!) and yet neat room with modern bathroom. We had a family/deluxe room for two, it was spacious, had very efficient air conditioning and a good bed. Good breakfast, glutenfree toast available. Would recommend.
