When booking to go to El Salvador the criteria was to have a property on the beach front and this was exactly what we got.
The property sits on a decent sized plot with a live on site caretaker, Linda, and her partner.
They were not in the slightest intrusive but were always at hand to help, change the water bottles and provide information on places to visit.
This is not luxurious accommodation, everything is basic but functional. However quite literally being a stones throw from the Pacific Ocean more than made up for the lack of luxurious fixtures.
The windows are all made from bamboo and all prop open. The views are amazing and this also provides great air flow. The ocean breeze stops around 6pm each evening until around 11pm. The wind then changes direction and blows in from the mountains providing much needed cool air. From 11pm onwards you can snuggle under the covers and get a great nights sleep on what were surprisingly comfortable mattresses.
There is no hot running water here, only cold. I thought this would be a problem but it was not. The heat is so intense that the cold showers are a blessing. Linda did however provide us with a fan, which was vital for us every evening for the few hours that there wasn't a breeze. I would recommend that ceiling fans be fitted to alleviate this issue.
We kept the windows propped open 24/7 and at no time did we feel unsafe.
In fact, wherever we went the locals couldn't have been more welcoming or friendly.
We were surprised to find Sears in San Salvador along with shopping malls and recognised food chains such as Pizza Hut.
The property is a 2 minute stroll from Hotel Punta Roca. It's owned by an American called Roberto who is a lovely guy and we enjoyed talking to him. We ate here most nights and tried the cocktails, food and drinks are tasty and reasonably priced and the kids were allowed to use the swimming pools.
There are numerous point breaks in close proximity along this part of the coast line and therefore the surf is amazing, how this area is not full to bursting with surfers is beyond me!
If surfing or body boarding are not your thing and you just want to swim then please be aware that you need to stay on the beach side of the breaking waves as there are strong Rips behind the surf.
We thoroughly enjoyed our week here. The kids loved being in the ocean first thing every morning and because of the design of the property we spent most of our time outside protected from the scorching sun.
